Divorce & Separation
Grounds for Divorce
To petition for a divorce in the UK you must show the irretrievable breakdown of a marriage through one of the following grounds:
- That your husband or wife’s behavior has been so unreasonable that you can no longer tolerate living with them.
- That your husband or wife has committed adultery.
- That your husband or wife deserted you at least two years ago.
- That you and your partner have been separated and lived apart for at least two years and that they consent to a divorce.
- That you and your husband or wife have been separated and lived apart for at least five years.
The Legal Practice Solicitors can offer you our expertise in assisting with divorce matters.
Mediation
Mediation is an alternative method of resolving matrimonial disputes. Mediation is often encouraged as it gives the opportunity to discuss problems in a calm non-confrontational environment and assists in maintaining good relations between the parties.
Collaborative Law
As members of Resolution, The Legal Practice Solicitors favour a collaborative family law process. Collaborative law is a relatively new way of dealing with family disputes. It aims to avoid going to court and instead encourages a non-confrontational process of communication between the parties.
Expat Divorce
Expat divorce is designed to assist parties living outside the UK. If you are originally from England or Wales but living abroad and want to get divorced using the English courts, then you are legible for an expat divorce.
Cohabitation and Unmarried Couples
Cohabitation Agreements
Unmarried couples do not have the same legal rights as married couples, yet they still may desire to set down some guidelines in their relationship. Drawing up a cohabitation agreement can help couples do this. A cohabitation agreement can cover a wide range of issues depending on your personal situation.

Child Maintenance Agreements
At The Legal Practice we can assist you with voluntary child maintenance agreements which aim to support the everyday living costs of a child

Civil Partnership
The Legal Practice can provide you with legal advice regarding civil partnerships and related matters.
Pre-Nuptial Agreements
Pre-nuptial agreements have become increasingly popular due to the security they provide during a divorce by setting out guidelines on how assets should be divided. This is desirable for wealthier parties who could lose over 50% of their wealth at divorce if they do not enter into such an agreement.
The Legal Practice can assist you in drawing up your pre-nuptial agreement and ensure your financial security.
